James Patterson's Alex Cross series follows Alex Cross, a Washington, D.C. detective and psychologist who investigates murders, kidnappings and serial offenders while trying to protect a family life that is repeatedly affected by his work. The books combine police investigation with psychological cat-and-mouse tension, and several adversaries or personal consequences carry across more than one novel. Each title has a major case of its own, but Along Came a Spider is the best starting point because the series develops Cross's career, relationships and family over many books. Patterson's short chapters and frequent viewpoint changes keep the pace fast, often cutting between Cross and the people he is pursuing. Readers looking for long-running crime thrillers will get more continuity by following publication order than by treating the books as completely separate cases. Read more Less
