Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series follows school friends George Beard and Harold Hutchins, two prank-loving comic creators who accidentally turn their strict headteacher Mr Krupp into the superhero Captain Underpants. The boys then have to deal with villains, inventions, time travel and the consequences of their own jokes while trying to keep Captain Underpants out of trouble. The books build on recurring characters and increasingly absurd events, so starting with The Adventures of Captain Underpants is worthwhile. They mix short prose chapters with cartoons, fake comics, wordplay and the deliberately low-tech 'Flip-O-Rama' action pages.
