Terry Pratchett's Discworld is a 41-novel comic fantasy series set on a flat world carried through space on four elephants standing on a giant turtle. Rather than one continuous story, the books form several overlapping strands following characters such as the witches, Death, the City Watch, the wizards and later Moist von Lipwig. That means you do not have to begin with The Colour of Magic or read all 41 in publication order. A reader can start with a strand — Mort for Death, Wyrd Sisters for the witches or Guards! Guards! for the Watch — and then follow those books in order. Pratchett uses fantasy plots to build jokes, satire and character-driven stories, and the later novels generally spend less time parodying fantasy conventions and more time on the societies and institutions of Discworld itself.
