Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles follow Tanis Half-Elven and a returning group of companions as war comes to the world of Krynn and dragons, long absent from common life, become central to the conflict. Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night and Dragons of Spring Dawning form one continuous story and should be read in order. The trilogy grew from the Dragonlance role-playing setting, so it uses a travelling party with distinct classes, abilities and personalities, but the novels increasingly broaden into war, divided loyalties and the struggle against the forces of the Dragon Queen.
