Charles Stross's Halting State novels are near-future techno-thrillers set in Scotland, where games, augmented reality and networked systems have become part of ordinary infrastructure. Halting State begins with a bank robbery committed inside an online game and follows several viewpoints as the apparent virtual crime connects to much more serious real-world security problems. Rule 34 moves to a different cast and case in the same near-future setting, concentrating on policing, automated systems and apparently unrelated crimes that start to converge. The books are connected by world and technology rather than one continuous protagonist, and their dense use of contemporary computing ideas makes them best suited to readers comfortable with technical detail.
