The Bat and Cockroaches take him to Australia and Thailand, while The Redbreast brings the series more firmly into its Norwegian setting; readers who want the full character arc should start with The Bat and continue in order. Each novel has its own major case, but later books refer back to earlier relationships and events. The series is dark crime fiction with violence, serial-killer plots, police procedure and long investigations, better suited to readers who prefer bleak Nordic noir than cosy or puzzle-led mysteries.
