Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot books follow Belgian private detective Hercule Poirot as he solves murders by paying close attention to behaviour, contradictions and what he calls his 'little grey cells'. Captain Hastings, Inspector Japp and Ariadne Oliver recur in parts of the series, but most novels and short-story collections present a separate case with a new group of suspects. The Mysterious Affair at Styles introduces Poirot, yet there is no need to read all the mysteries in strict order; readers can comfortably choose well-known cases such as The Murder of Roger Ackroyd or later novels independently. The books range from country-house mysteries to trains, hotels and international settings, but the emphasis is usually on motive, alibi and misdirection rather than action.
