Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy follows Lyra Belacqua from an Oxford in a parallel world where human souls exist outside the body as animal-shaped daemons. Northern Lights begins as a rescue story and expands into a conflict involving multiple worlds, Dust, organised religion and free will, with Will Parry becoming a second central character from The Subtle Knife onwards. The three books tell one continuous story and should be read in order.
