Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, co-written with Andrew Child from The Sentinel onwards, follows a former US Army military policeman who travels with few possessions and repeatedly becomes involved in crimes, conspiracies and violent disputes. Reacher is an investigator as much as an action hero: he studies inconsistencies, reads people closely and uses his military experience when a case turns dangerous. Most novels tell a self-contained story in a new place, so you can start with Killing Floor or choose another book without needing the whole backstory.
