Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series follows a private investigator working in fictional Santa Teresa, California, in the 1980s. A Is for Alibi begins the alphabet sequence, and each later novel gives Kinsey a new case while gradually adding to her family history, friendships and deliberately independent way of life. The books can often be enjoyed separately, but publication order from A through Y gives the best sense of those continuing details; Grafton died before writing a Z volume.
