Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series follows Claire Randall, a twentieth-century nurse who is transported through a stone circle to eighteenth-century Scotland and becomes closely bound to Highlander Jamie Fraser. The novels combine historical fiction, romance, war, politics and time travel, following Claire, Jamie and their family across decades and several countries. This is one continuing story, so Outlander is the clear starting point and the main novels should be read in order. The books are very long and densely detailed, with domestic life and relationships given as much space as battles, travel and political events. They are written for adults and include sex, violence and traumatic events. Readers choosing the series mainly for romance should expect the scope to broaden considerably beyond the central couple as the family story grows. Read more Less
