Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason series follows defence lawyer Perry Mason as he takes on difficult criminal cases, usually working with his secretary Della Street and private investigator Paul Drake. The novels combine courtroom exchanges with investigation: Mason tests witnesses, follows gaps in the evidence and often has to work out what really happened while his client is under serious suspicion. Each book presents a separate case, so there is no need to begin with The Case of the Velvet Claws or read the series strictly in order. The style is brisk and plot-led, with much of the interest coming from legal manoeuvring, cross-examination and late reversals. Readers looking for classic American courtroom mysteries can comfortably pick up whichever case appeals to them. Read more Less
