Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit stories follow the mischievous Peter and the wider rabbit family through a small group of connected animal tales. The Tale of Peter Rabbit begins with Peter disobeying his mother and entering Mr McGregor's garden; The Tale of Benjamin Bunny brings Peter back with his cousin, while The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies and The Tale of Mr Tod continue with members of the same family and neighbouring animals. These are separate illustrated stories rather than chapters of one novel, but reading Peter Rabbit first makes the relationships clearer. Potter's writing uses precise countryside detail, dry humour and moments of real danger, while the small-format illustrations carry much of the character and setting.
