Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe novels follow a private detective working in Los Angeles, where apparently straightforward jobs lead into corruption, blackmail, damaged families and violence. The Big Sleep establishes Marlowe's dry first-person voice, and Farewell, My Lovely continues the same hard-boiled world with a separate case; later Marlowe novels return to the character without forming one continuous plot. They can be read individually, though publication order gives a natural progression through Chandler's work.
