Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy begins when humanity makes contact with an alien civilisation and then follows the consequences across an increasingly large span of time. The Three-Body Problem establishes the scientific mystery and the first contact; The Dark Forest deals with humanity's response to the approaching threat; Death's End pushes the story much further into the future and expands its scale again. These three novels form one continuous sequence and should be read in order. The books are idea-heavy science fiction, with physics, astronomy, strategy and large changes in civilisation often taking priority over a single stable cast of characters. Readers who enjoy hard science fiction and big speculative concepts are likely to appreciate the growing scale, but it is not a trilogy of independent adventures. Read more Less
