Charles Stross's Saturn's Children books share a future in which humanity is extinct but the robots created to serve humans continue to live, work and build societies shaped by the assumptions of their makers. Saturn's Children follows Freya, an obsolete companion android drawn into a dangerous interplanetary job, while Neptune's Brood takes place much later with a different protagonist and a civilisation spread across interstellar distances. The two novels can be read independently because they do not form one continuous plot. Both use robot viewpoints to examine economics, ownership and identity, but the second shifts from Solar System intrigue towards the practical problem of finance between the stars. Read more Less
