Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Sequence is set in an alternative Britain ruled by magicians who summon spirits to do their bidding. The main trilogy alternates between the ambitious young magician Nathaniel, the djinni Bartimaeus and the commoner Kitty Jones, giving the political conflict several sharply different viewpoints. The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye and Ptolemy's Gate should be read in order; The Ring of Solomon is a prequel set centuries earlier and can be read afterwards without interrupting the trilogy. Bartimaeus's sarcastic narration and footnotes provide much of the humour, while the story grows increasingly concerned with the cost of the magicians' system. Read more Less
