Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun follows Severian, an apprentice in a guild of torturers who is exiled and begins a journey across a far-future Earth under a dying sun. The Shadow of the Torturer, The Claw of the Conciliator, The Sword of the Lictor and The Citadel of the Autarch form one continuous first-person narrative; The Urth of the New Sun later acts as a coda. They should be read in order. Wolfe rarely stops to explain his world directly, so unfamiliar terms, apparent contradictions and Severian's own account all require close attention.
