Clive Barker's Books of Blood are six volumes of horror short stories rather than one continuing narrative. The collections range widely in setting and subject, from supernatural encounters and body horror to black comedy and stories in which apparently ordinary places hide disturbing rules. Because the volumes do not build a single plot, they can be read in any order, although starting with Volume One gives the clearest introduction to Barker's early short fiction. The format makes them easy to sample story by story, but the material is firmly adult, often graphic, and much stranger than conventional ghost-story horror.
