Clive Barker's Books of the Art begin with The Great and Secret Show, in which ordinary American lives become entangled with Quiddity, a dream sea connected to hidden powers and conflicts beyond everyday reality. Everville continues the mythology with returning characters and a new community whose history is tied to the same struggle. The two published novels should be read in order because the second develops people, ideas and consequences from the first. Barker mixes contemporary horror and dark fantasy with large-scale supernatural mythology, moving between intimate human obsessions and a much stranger reality behind them; a planned third book has not yet completed the sequence.
