N. K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy is set on a continent repeatedly devastated by catastrophic seismic events, where people called orogenes can control geological energy but are feared and controlled by society. The Fifth Season introduces Essun and several apparently separate viewpoints whose connections become central to the story, while The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky continue directly from its revelations. The three novels should be read in order and reward close attention to viewpoint, chronology and terminology.
