David Gemmell's Drenai Saga is a group of heroic-fantasy novels set across different periods in the history of the Drenai and neighbouring lands. Legend centres on the ageing warrior Druss defending the fortress of Dros Delnoch, while books such as Waylander and The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend move backwards to earlier characters and events; later novels return to different generations. The series therefore does not follow one simple chronology, and publication order is an easy first route. Gemmell writes direct, battle-heavy fantasy with recurring ideas of courage, reputation and redemption, but most individual novels have their own central conflict and protagonist. Read more Less
