Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files follows Harry Dresden, a professional wizard in modern Chicago who works as a private investigator and helps the police with cases involving magic. Early books combine detective plots with vampires, faeries, ghosts and other supernatural threats, while later volumes build a much larger continuing conflict and deepen the rules and politics of the magical world. Storm Front is the starting point, and although the first cases are fairly self-contained, reading in order becomes increasingly important as allies, enemies and past decisions return. The books are first-person urban fantasy with a hard-boiled detective influence, quick action and frequent humour.
