David Eddings's Elenium trilogy follows Sparhawk, a veteran Pandion Knight who returns from exile to find Queen Ehlana gravely ill and preserved by magic while a cure is sought. The Diamond Throne, The Ruby Knight and The Sapphire Rose form one continuous quest as Sparhawk and his companions search for the means to save her and confront a larger supernatural threat. The trilogy should be read in order. It is traditional quest fantasy with an older, experienced central character rather than a young novice, and much of its appeal lies in the banter and long-standing relationships within Sparhawk's group of knights, soldiers and magicians.
