Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games series is set in Panem, a future state where the Capitol controls its districts and uses the Hunger Games as a brutal public spectacle. The original trilogy follows Katniss Everdeen from volunteering in her sister's place through the political consequences of the Games and the rebellion that follows, so The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay must be read in order. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping are prequels set decades earlier, each focusing on characters and events that add context to Panem's later history. The books are young adult dystopian fiction with first-person or close character focus, violence and political manipulation. New readers will usually understand the prequels better after the original trilogy because many of their details gain meaning from what comes later chronologically. Read more Less
