Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter's Long Earth series begins when plans for a simple device allow people to step sideways into countless parallel versions of Earth, most of them untouched by human civilisation. The Long Earth introduces natural stepper Joshua Valienté and the artificial intelligence Lobsang, while The Long War, The Long Mars, The Long Utopia and The Long Cosmos explore how migration, politics and discovery change across the new worlds. The books are best read in order because the setting develops over time and recurring characters age. They combine speculative science fiction with Pratchett's dry humour and Baxter's interest in the consequences of very large ideas. Read more Less
