Brandon Sanderson's Reckoners trilogy is set in a world where ordinary people suddenly gained superpowers and many of the new 'Epics' became violent rulers. Steelheart follows David Charleston, who joins a small resistance group dedicated to finding the weaknesses that make apparently invincible Epics vulnerable; Firefight and Calamity continue the same conflict and reveal more about where the powers came from. The three novels should be read in order. They use straightforward first-person narration, invented weapons and carefully worked-out superpowers, with fast chapters and problem-solving that make the series closer to a superhero thriller than traditional epic fantasy.
