Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Saga begins in the world of Midkemia, where the young orphan Pug becomes an apprentice magician just as a rift between worlds brings an invading army from Kelewan. Magician establishes the war and a large recurring cast, while Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon continue the consequences for Pug, Prince Arutha and their allies. The three books should be read in order and form the opening sequence of Feist's much larger Riftwar Cycle. The story grows from a coming-of-age fantasy into interworld war, court politics and increasingly powerful magic, so later books assume familiarity with people and events introduced in Magician.
