L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce spans many centuries of a fantasy world shaped by the competing magical principles of order and chaos. Different books follow different protagonists and eras, sometimes returning to explain people or events that were only history in earlier novels, so the publication sequence is deliberately not chronological. For a first reading, Modesitt himself recommends publication order beginning with The Magic of Recluce; chronological order works better as an alternative for rereading. The novels often combine magic with practical work, trade, government and the consequences of power, giving the series a broad historical scope rather than one continuous hero's journey.
