David Brin's Uplift books are set in a galaxy where older species gain status by raising younger species to intelligence, making humanity unusual because it appears to have developed without a recognised patron. Sundiver introduces this civilisation through an expedition to the Sun, while Startide Rising and The Uplift War form the strongest connected early arc. Brightness Reef and Infinity's Shore belong to the later Uplift Storm trilogy and follow a new set of characters. The books are best read by internal sequence, with the earlier novels providing useful background.
