Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series follows Vlad, a human assassin and minor crime boss living within the long-lived Dragaeran Empire. Each novel gives him a particular problem involving crime, politics, magic or his complicated relationships, while later books steadily reveal more about his past and the empire around him. Publication order, beginning with Jhereg, is the easiest first reading even though the internal chronology moves backwards and forwards. The books are relatively compact, dialogue-driven fantasy with first-person narration, dry humour and recurring characters, and they often combine the machinery of a crime story with a setting full of sorcery and aristocratic intrigue.
